Sony Salzman is a freelance journalist covering science, technology and medicine. Her work has appeared in NBC, The Boston Globe, BuzzFeed, Al Jazeera America, VICE, MedPage Today, TechCrunch, Rewire.News, Lifehacker, NovaNext and elsewhere online and in print. She works as a fact checker for Healthline, and is a regular contributor to TheBody.com.

From 2015 to 2018, Sony worked as a part-time researcher/reporter for Fortune Magazine-contributor Katherine Eban, helping her investigate the global generic drug industry for her New York Times bestseller, Bottle of Lies. During this time, she interviewed 67 sources, filed nine FOIA requests, and wrote 11 narrative-driven memos. Previously, she worked as an investigative journalist at the wire service BioPharm Insight, which was part of the Financial Times Group.

As a freelance editor, Sony has worked as managing editor for the online publications GlobalHealthHub and MedTech Boston. In both roles, Sony built and expanded a team of freelancers, coordinated news coverage and worked with writers to refine their stories. As a producer, she coordinated two major conferences - MedTech Boston’s “Google Glass Challenge” and WGBH’s “Science Media and Awards Summit” (SMASH). In preparation for these events, she created production timelines and directed thematic panel discussions on stage, with the goal of making science engaging to public audiences.

Sony has received several awards for her work, including first place in the Jerome Nachman Writing Contest for a story about the intersection of race and politics in the early days of the Obama administration. Her NPR radio segment about the birth of the ride-sharing economy earned the Society of Professional Journalists’ In-Depth Reporting Award and the New England Associated Press Radio Journalism Award.

During her studies for a Master's from Boston University’s Science Journalism program, Sony worked as a research intern at the PBS television series, NOVA, produced by WGBH. She also attended Boston University as an undergrad, where she studied journalism and co-founded BU's first university-affiliated record label.

A California native, Sony has lived and travelled all over the world, but she currently calls Brooklyn home.
